Rants: Gun Control in America

AK-47.
Revolver.
Hand Gun.
Rifle.

In America, there are about 89 firearms per 100 Americans.
74% are rifles or shotguns.
68% are handguns.
17% are semi-automatic firearms.
8% are other types.

Now explain to me, why do we need all these guns? No, we don’t live in a third-world country where every time you step out of your home you are in immediate danger. There aren’t any type of terrorist groups active right now in the community. So why are there statistics that tell us (the citizens) that 89 out of 100 Americans own some type of firearm. No, you do not need it. No matter what you say; you do not need a firearm for protection, hunting, or target practice.

If your argument to owning a firearm is protection, then what are the police, and other government protection groups for? Yes, I do understand the police may not arrive in time but that doesn’t mean you need an AK-47 to protect yourself. Those types of weapons are dangerous and can be used for other purposes that may injure or kill others. If you use your firearm for hunting or target practice, you’re just wasting money. Why do you need to hunt and kill wild animals when you can just drive yourself down to the local store and buy food? Do you find some type of joy seeing wildlife fall because of your bullets? I sure do love the way you think.

Now after reading the previous paragraphs all you gun-fanatics will be saying, “What about the 2nd amendment? We have rights!” Well of course you have rights. Everyone does, so stop parading around like you’re some special person because really, you aren’t. When the Bill of Rights and Constitution were created, we just came out of a war with England. America wasn’t very stable or powerful as it is now. There were many different threats against american citizens from England and the Native Americans. Of course at the time you’re going to want to protect your family and yourself. Not anymore because the United States of America is a lot different. We have a huge military system, stable communities, and a public protection system (Police, Swat, FBI, etc.) If you think about it, the 2nd amendment does’t exactly apply anymore. Your argument is officially invalid.

Newtown, Connecticut. The foundation of that incident were firearms. Yes, the shooter was psychologically unstable. But that isn’t his fault. He shouldn’t have been able to obtain firearms that easily. The mother was named as the owner but wouldn’t you think that her having a unstable son would show up on a reliable background check? Guess not. These type of incidents have happened more than once. Recognize these headline titles? Movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Massacre at VA Tech. Columbine High School Massacre. So many kids, teens, and young adults were injured, killed, or sociologically scarred for life, just because there wasn’t enough background checks against obtaining firearms.

Guns do not protect against other guns. Safety cautions performed beforehand protects us though. Better background checks, training courses to use firearms, and more should be improved around every american community. About 2 days before the Newtown shooting I walked into a local Walmart and saw a whole section with rifles, and other type of firearms. If you were 18 yrs. of age with proper identification, you would’ve easily obtained a firearm. That’s how easy it is to get a gun in the United States. Sad isn’t it?

So in wake of these shootings and reality, let’s support gun control in America and make it safe for all citizens.
